Transshipment of Inventories Among Retailers: Myopic vs. Farsighted Stability
نویسنده
چکیده
T author considers a model of a decentralized distribution system consisting of n retailers selling an identical product. Retailers face a stochastic demand and must order their initial inventory before this demand is realized. After demand realization, retailers decide how much of their unsold inventory or unsatisfied demand they want to share with other retailers. This is followed by a transshipment of leftover inventories and distribution of the additional profit generated through inventory sharing. The author addresses the following issue: Suppose that the retailers distribute the profit from inventory sharing according to an allocation rule that induces retailers to share their residuals in a way that maximizes the additional profit, such as the Shapley value, but may not belong to the core. Is it likely that, in this framework, all retailers will jointly share their residuals and not form subcoalitions? Previous research has looked at this problem from a myopic viewpoint and concluded that the grand coalition is not stable. Unlike the prior work, the author looks at stability in a farsighted sense. That is, retailers do not consider only their immediate payoffs but are also concerned with reactions of other retailers to their actions. In a symmetric setting, with identical additional unit revenues from transshipments generated by all retailers, farsighted retailers always maximize their allocations by not defecting from the grand coalition. The author also provides conditions when the same is true for nonidentical additional unit revenues.

Transshipment of Inventories: Dual Allocations vs. Transshipment Prices
We study a newsvendor game with transshipments, in which n retailers face a stochastic demand for an identical product. Before the demand is realized, each retailer independently orders her initial inventory. After the demand is realized, the retailers select an optimal transshipment pattern and ship residual inventories in order to meet residual demands. Unsold inventories are salvaged at the ...
متن کاملMyopic or Farsighted ? An Experiment on Network Formation Georg KIRCHSTEIGER
Pairwise stability (Jackson and Wolinsky, 1996) is the standard stability concept in network formation. It assumes myopic behavior of the agents in the sense that they do not forecast how others might react to their actions. Assuming that agents are farsighted, related stability concepts have been proposed. We design a simple network formation experiment to test these theories. Our results prov...
متن کاملRisk-sharing networks and farsighted stability
Evidences suggest that in some villages of developing countries, agents rely on mutual insurance agreements to deal with income or expenditure shocks. In this paper we analyze which risk-sharing networks can be sustained in the long run when individuals are farsighted rather than myopic, in the sense that they are able to forecast how other agents would react to their actions. In particular, we...
متن کاملIncentives for Transshipment in a Supply Chain with Decentralized Retailers
We examine transshipment incentives in a decentralized supply chain where a monopolist distributes a product through independent retailers. A key insight is that the transshipment price determines whether the firms benefit from, or are hurt by, transshipment. In particular, we show that the manufacturer prefers to set the transshipment price as high as possible, while retailers prefer a lower t...

The paper examines the strategic stability and the e¢ ciency of free trade networks. We reconsider the endogenous tari¤ model introduced by Goyal and Joshi (2006). Di¤erent from their analysis with myopic countries, we adopt a new solution concept, pairwise farsighted stable set (Herings, Mauleon and Vannetelbosch, 2009, GEB), to examine the formation of free trade agreements (FTAs) as a networ...
